Old car park
Alternative Names: Old car park to Totaig Drift dive
Type of Dive: Shore drift dive
Suggested experience: Sports Diver (with Boat Cover (launched from Letterfearn, or Dornie across the loch) if poss)
Travel directions: Loch Duich south shore. Keep going past Letterfearn til you get to the gate across the road. Google
Parking directions: Park considerately at the wide open space before the gate. Google

Distance from Fort William: 65 Miles 1 hr 40 mins
Lat & Long: 57.268451,-5.522475
Tides: Tide tables
Depth: 30m available with amazing topography, shoaling to 6m at the exit (Ferry Slipway)
Site entry/exit: Google It’s a fair trek down to the water from up here. Take your time to traverse the grassy slope to the shingle beach, then head out to the rocky headland on the left. Take down the heavy stuff first then bring down the lighter parts of your gear. It’ll give you time to get your breath back. And you exit the water here.. Google
Underwater directions: Drop down to as deep as you wish (we did 28m), hugging the bottom as you do to avoid being swept downstream too early. At your chosen depth go with the flow... DO keep an eye on your depth and remember to vent your suit etc then re-inflate as you travel over the varied topography. It can get to 5 knots on this drift. If you start your drift at less than 15m you’ll be wheeched up to 1-2m which isn’t good, but also not too bad as you’ll only have been down for a few seconds.
NOTE: This can be a fun dive when done on the first two hours of the Ebb tide as there’s greater speed. Keep close-ish to the rocky structures or the bottom once you’re past the huge outcrops at the beginning (15m or so) if you wish to slow down. Now, when you reach the coarse sandy bottom at around 6m that has little/no life on it, you’re near the exit point, just fin to the left and the current will disappear and swim thro the kelp fronds back to the rocky side where you’ll come across the wrecks of a couple of old trucks that didn’t make it round the bend at the top of the cliff above you.
Site Hazards: Current, read the above! Steep slopes to traverse to get to the water. Take your time.
Nearest Public phone: None close to here.
Accommodation: Ratagan Youth Hostel, Kintail Lodge Bunkhouse, Wild Camping in the trees along this part of the road. (Be careful with fires in this area, please only light them down on the shore or after placing flat rocks in the bottoms and sides of any fire pits you see. The ground here is just leaf mould and stays alight for days after summer campers have gone home).
Mobile Network service: O2 works fine
Other comments: You can leave the kit at the Ferry Point and walk back to the car parking to save your legs, but please be swift when picking your gear up. It’s private ground but the young chap is a decent bloke.
Pub: We took our own as we were camping
