SS Breda

Type: A Dutch steamer 6941 ton 127 metres long.

Wreck Information:  On 23 December 1940 a Heinkel tried to bomb the Breda in 1942 but missed. The blast still managed to damage the ship so that it flooded. It was towed to Ardmuckunish Bay where it was grounded but later sank into deeper water. It used to be possible to enter the wreck at the bow and leave at the stern without leaving the wreck except at the broken part near the stern. But the old girl is slowly breaking up, and its best so stay away from overhead areas. The engine room is a cavernes space and is not for the sport diver. The best fun is having a rummage in the big open holds. Most if not all the banknotes are gone now but there are still plenty of small coloured bottles and it never ceases to amaze me the things found in these holds.

Other comments:   This must be the most dived shipwreck in Scotland so be prepared to have lots of other divers on the wreck if its a bank holiday. The holds have hawker biplanes, 30 De Havilland Moths, spares, cement. Indian 10 Rupee bank notes, pint, HP sauce and other pieces of dive treasure. Over the years as more is lifted from the top of the holds it reveals more below. The wreck is starting to show signs of collapsing and care must be taken in certain parts of this wreck.

Dive Reports: Marty Henderson, Sep 07 The SS BREDA is a fantastic dive for all levels of diver grade with stock left on it, if you look closely enough there is still plenty to find in the ship. By the time you have taken in all the decks and anything else you want to see on board you have had quite a long dive.
