HM Coastguard Proposals
This consultation puts forward proposals for a modernised, fully-networked national Coastguard that can more flexibly manage the greatly varying demands of its workload. These proposals will enable Coastguard Officers to better use their skills and training with a salary that reflects this.

We also want to change and improve the leadership, management and support we give our volunteer Coastguard Rescue Officers, and make better use of their local knowledge and training.

The consultation contains opportunities for comments and suggestions. The consultation is for Coastguard staff, Coastguard volunteers, partner organisations and the wider general public with an interest in the services the Coastguard Coordination Service provides. The consultation started on 16 December 2010 and run for 14 weeks until 24 March 2011.

Please make sure your responses arrive no later than that date.  online response form

Help us stop dolphin drive hunts
Oscar-winning film The Cove showed the world how Japanese fishermen round up groups of dolphins and drive them towards the shore, where they are slaughtered. This September the drive hunts started all over again.

Shockingly the victims are not only killed for their meat. Others are selected for Japan's aquarium industry, destined for a life on public display, or for export to countries like China, Turkey and Egypt.

These hunts must end.

Taiji is a small coastal town in Japan that holds the greatest Japanese secret: it is the world’s largest slaughterhouse of dolphins. According to the documentary, over 23 000 dolphins were killed in 2007. The ironic part about this Japanese secret is that the citizens themselves are left in the dark about this industry. Japanese whaling is no secret. In fact, they are widely known as the world’s leader in exporting whale meat. However, due to the 1986 ban on commercial whaling, the fishermen needed new victims. This is where the killing and selling of dolphins grew into a multi-million dollar industry.

Do you dive through the winter
This is the first winter I have not been diving. Some divers stop diving in October and start again in April, That's half the year wasted and just when the viz is at its best in the cold water.
