Gloves

Standard 3mm neoprene gloves come in most sizes and are fine for general scuba diving. Standard gloves come in different thickness 3, 3.5, 4, and 5mm. If you are using a camera a 3mm glove are better to use as you can get access to the buttons.

Standard 4mm neoprene are warmer and can have a merino lining to provide more warmth.

5mm neoprene coated with kevlar ideal are for wreck diving as they are stronger and last longer than standard gloves. These gloves cost more than standard gloves but will last a lot longer. Make sure the kevlar covers the whole glove not just the finger tips. The general feeling is Endurotech are the best fingered gloves. These gloves were designed by a diver and it shows.

Mitts have 3 fingers instead of 5 Warmer very slightly less dexterous but 1000 times easier to get on and off. The general feeling is Poseidons and Endurotech are the best mitts.

3 and 5mm neoprene kayak gloves work well for diving and a fraction of the cost of diving gloves.

Dry gloves that have a furry lining and can have a special connection to the suit or a cuff seal. These are expensive and not for wreck or shore diving. These gloves tend to be used in extreme cold water like ice diving and are not suitable for diving in the UK.

Dry gloves can be standard 3mm neoprene gloves except they are sealed, have cuff seals and keep you a lot warmer. The main drawback with dry gloves is getting them on and pulling them off.

Summary

Most dive gloves nowadays are fit for purpose but some are better. Some gloves have a kevlar coating and they are better suited to wreck and shore diving, as they are harder wearing. Other gloves are warmer due to special linings or are dry due to seals on the cuffs. My advice on gloves is to look at what other divers that do your sort of diving are using. If they have holes in the fingers ask why. A good tip for putting on dive gloves is to use a pair of plastic gloves under the dive gloves. You get the plastic gloves free at the petrol station. If you are using an u/w camera you may have to use 3mm standard gloves so you can get access to the camera controls.
