Pony clamps

Pony sack

The pony cylinder is secured within a fabric bag which is in turn attached to the main cylinder by either the main cam band and/or by independent straps.

A highly affordable stowage method which also confers some protection to the surface of the cylinder. Some divers dislike the feeling of movement of the sack and the perceived chance of the pony being accidentally lost.

Aluminium quick release pony clamp

The clamp comprises 2 interlocking components. One part is attached semi-permanently to the pony cylinder by metal bands tightened with jubilee clips. The 2nd part has the BCD cam band threaded through it, securing it to the main cylinder. The 2 parts are easily attached and detached using a quick release mechanism.

Popular design. Pony cylinder is rigidly held in place. Allows easy swapping of primary cylinders between dives. Can be used with other devices, e.g. battery packs for umbilical torches.

Stainless steel quick release pony clamp

Similar to aluminium design but made of stainless steel. Some designs may have sharp edges.

Pony bands

Pony and main cylinders connected by cam bands. Relatively inexpensive and easy to swap both cylinders between dives. Care needed to ensure that cam bands are adequately tightened. Twin bands is a backup as well if one fails the other will hold.

Side slung pony mounting

The pony cylinder is secured to D rings on the BCD by bolt snaps. The entire rig can be unclipped and passed to a buddy in distress. (also see side slings)

Summary

There are 4 principal ways of securing the pony cylinder to the main rig: within a fabric sack, by means of a metal clamp

system, using cam band straps and by side mounting.
